Afro-Semitic Experience bassist David Chevan has been working with Vic Steffens of Horizon Music Group on the band's new CD, Further Definitions of the Days of Awe. The CD is currently slated to be out on September 13 and it features the voices of Cantor Jack Mendelson, his son, Danny Mendelson, and Cantors Erik Contzius and Lisa Arbisser.
This is how the the CD currently looks:

Here's a shot of Vic Steffens working on the music:

You might think Vic is asleep in this next shot but years of working with him has taught me that he is actually listening very carefully to the music. This is Vic deep in concentration.

Here is Vic and David after a long day in the studio. This kind of work can make you exceedingly goofy!!

There will be more news about the new CD in the next few days. Here's what the new CD cover will look like:

Northampton Concert Highlights

We got some photos of the Northampton concert from David's wife Julie and from David's mom. The weather last night was just right--warm, but not too hot or humid. The band sounded great under the trees on the lawn of the Forbes Library.

And here's a shot of David:

And Saskia Laroo was sounding great:

Classic Posters from the Archives

As I was looking through a pile of old papers I discovered a number of older posters from early Afro-Semitic Experience gigs. In a fit of nostalgia I scanned several of them and have decided to post a few to the blog just so you can see some of really nice posters that have been made over the years by others to advertise the band.
This first poster is amongst the oldest that I found. This one goes back to a 2003 concert at Dartmouth College.

And here is a poster for a concert at UMass from around that same time period. The photo was taken by Kathleen Cei back when we were still playing once a month at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown. You can see our friends Richard McGhee and Mixashawn jamming away with us in this shot.

The last poster for this blog post comes from a concert we gave in Lakeland, Florida a few years ago. The design of this one is great. It has a vintage vibe to it that makes it look even older. That was a very cool concert and we got to meet an interesting cantor, Victor Geigner, who has a rich and resonant voice and who really got down with us.

Afro-Semitic Experience begin work on new project

The Afro-Semitic Experience have begun work on a new project: Jazz Souls on Fire. This new project, currently being developed by band co-founders Warren Byrd and David Chevan will explore original sacred jazz compositions by jazz composers. For this project the band will put aside interpreting traditional sacred pieces like gospel songs, spirituals and synagogue hymns and instead explore the music that jazz musicians have created in response and in supplement to their spiritual experiences. The group will be looking at pieces at least as far back in the history of the music as Fletcher Henderson's "Down South Camp Meeting" and Charlie Parker's "The Hymn" to more contemporary works by John Coltrane, Jim Pepper, and Don Pullen. The project is currently in its development phase and Byrd and Chevan anticipate a premiere performance of this project by mid to late November. For more information about this project please contact the band at info@afrosemiticexperience.net.
